The purpose is to catalog what you have--some people have so many that they don't fit on a single bookshelf. For instance, about 90% of my books are in boxes. In addition, once you've added your books, it tells you the names of other users who have the same books. So you can click on those people's names and look at thier libraries -- a great way to get ideas for new books to read.

you go thru the site and add the books that you already own or read on the website?
Why not just turn your head over towards your bookshelf and look at what you have?
